Saxophone Lessons in Athens, GA

Alto or tenor, first note or first solo. One-on-one sax lessons built around a sound you're proud of — at Rabbit Hole Studios, at your home, or live on Zoom.

Taught by Nick Bradfield

From $45 · 30-minute lesson

The saxophone is one of the most expressive instruments there is, and one of the most frustrating to start alone: squeaks, a thin tone, notes that won't come out. Nearly all of that comes down to embouchure, air support, and the reed — and it's much faster to fix with someone watching and listening than from a video.

Once the sound is there, lessons go where your music goes: reading for a band or ensemble, learning lines from the records you love, or improvising over blues and jazz changes.

A sound you like

Embouchure, air, and reed choice come first, because tone is what makes people want to listen.

Reading and by ear

Read charts and notation, and learn to pick up lines by ear from records.

Learn to improvise

Scales and patterns turned into something useful: soloing over blues and jazz changes.

Frequently asked questions

How much are saxophone lessons?
On a monthly plan, lessons are $45 for 30 minutes, $60 for 45, or $75 for 60; a single lesson is $10 more. Online lessons cost the same as studio lessons. In-home lessons add travel at $100 an hour of round-trip drive time from Athens — roughly up to $65 within 15 miles, and up to about $220 at 50 miles. Full details are on the pricing page.
Alto or tenor — which should I start on?
Most people start on alto: it's smaller, lighter, and a little easier to fill with air. If the sound you love is tenor, start there — the skills carry over between them.
Why does my saxophone squeak?
Usually it's the reed, how much of the mouthpiece is in your mouth, or biting down. It's one of the first things a lesson fixes, and it's rarely the instrument.
Do I need my own saxophone?
For practice, yes. Renting is a sensible way to start. Ask before you buy — cheap saxophones can be hard to play in tune.
Can I take saxophone lessons on Zoom?
Yes. Use headphones and turn on Zoom's "original sound for musicians" setting so your tone comes through without being filtered.
