Music Theory & Ear Training

Why songs work — and how to hear it. One-on-one theory and ear training for any instrument and any age, at the studio, at your home, or on Zoom.

Taught by Nick Bradfield or Sean T. Conlon

From $45 · 30-minute lesson

Theory has a bad reputation because it's usually taught as rules on paper. Taught properly it's the opposite: a way to understand what you're already hearing, so you can learn songs faster, write your own, and talk to other musicians in the same language.

Lessons tie every idea to real music — the progression in a song you love, the scale behind a solo, the rhythm that makes a groove feel good — and train your ear alongside it, so the theory becomes something you can hear and play, not just name.

Theory you can hear

Every concept is tied to a sound, so it sticks — and shows up in your playing.

For any instrument

Guitar, piano, voice, horns, or production — the same language underneath all of it.

Write better songs

Understand why a chord change works, and you can make your own on purpose.

Frequently asked questions

How much are music theory lessons?
On a monthly plan, lessons are $45 for 30 minutes, $60 for 45, or $75 for 60; a single lesson is $10 more. Online lessons cost the same as studio lessons. In-home lessons add travel at $100 an hour of round-trip drive time from Athens — roughly up to $65 within 15 miles, and up to about $220 at 50 miles. Full details are on the pricing page.
Do I need to play an instrument?
It helps, because theory makes more sense on an instrument, but you can start without one. A keyboard — even a small one — is the easiest way to see it.
I play by ear. Is theory worth it?
Yes. You already know more than you think; theory puts names and patterns to what your ear is doing, which makes learning and writing much faster.
Can I learn theory on Zoom?
Yes — it's one of the best subjects for online lessons, with screen sharing for notation and examples.
