Native American-Style Flute Lessons

One of the most welcoming instruments there is — most people play a real melody in their first lesson. One-on-one flute lessons at Rabbit Hole Studios, at your home, or on Zoom.

Taught by Nick Bradfield

From $45 · 30-minute lesson

The Native American-style flute is usually tuned to a pentatonic scale, so there are almost no "wrong" notes: cover and uncover the holes and it sings. That makes it one of the fastest instruments to start on — and one you can keep going deeper with for years, through breath control, tone, ornaments, and melodies of your own.

I teach the Native American-style flute as a musician, not as a representative of any tribe or its ceremonies. We learn technique and melodies, not sacred songs — and I encourage every student to listen to and learn from Native flute players and makers too.

A real melody, fast

The pentatonic tuning means you're making music from the first lesson, not just exercises.

Breath and tone

The flute is all breath. Learning to shape it is what turns notes into a voice.

Improvise from day one

Much of this music is played by ear — you'll be making up your own melodies early.

Frequently asked questions

How much are flute lessons?
On a monthly plan, lessons are $45 for 30 minutes, $60 for 45, or $75 for 60; a single lesson is $10 more. Online lessons cost the same as studio lessons. In-home lessons add travel at $100 an hour of round-trip drive time from Athens — roughly up to $65 within 15 miles, and up to about $220 at 50 miles. Full details are on the pricing page.
Do I need a flute already?
You'll want one to practise between lessons. Flutes come in different keys and sizes, and a mid-range key such as A minor or G minor is a common first choice. Ask before you buy and we'll help you choose.
Do I need to read music?
No. Most flute music is learned by ear or from simple finger diagrams.
Can I learn flute on Zoom?
Yes. With Zoom's musician mode switched on, the long, breathy tones of the flute come through clearly.
Is this the same as the sound baths?
No. These are music lessons. Sound baths are a separate listening session you can book on their own.
