Clarinet Lessons in Athens, GA

A warm, clear sound and a comfortable embouchure — then the break, the upper register, and the music you want to play. One-on-one clarinet lessons at the studio, at your home, or on Zoom.

Taught by Nick Bradfield

From $45 · 30-minute lesson

The clarinet rewards good fundamentals more than almost any instrument. Get the embouchure, air support, and reed right, and the notorious "break" — the jump between the low and high registers — stops being a wall. Get them wrong and every new note is a fight. Lessons put the fundamentals first so the rest comes easier.

Plenty of people played clarinet in school and haven't touched it since. If that's you, lessons are a fast way back: find what's still there, rebuild the rest, and get to music you actually enjoy playing.

Tone first

Embouchure, air, and reed setup that produce a warm, centred sound instead of a thin or squeaky one.

Over the break

Crossing smoothly between registers is the classic clarinet hurdle, and it gets its own attention.

Frequently asked questions

How much are clarinet lessons?
On a monthly plan, lessons are $45 for 30 minutes, $60 for 45, or $75 for 60; a single lesson is $10 more. Online lessons cost the same as studio lessons. In-home lessons add travel at $100 an hour of round-trip drive time from Athens — roughly up to $65 within 15 miles, and up to about $220 at 50 miles. Full details are on the pricing page.
What is "the break" on the clarinet?
It's the point where the clarinet switches from its low register to its upper one, and a lot of the fingering changes at once. Every clarinetist works through it; with the right setup and practice it becomes smooth.
Which reed strength should I use?
Most beginners start on a softer reed and move up as their embouchure strengthens. The right strength depends on your mouthpiece and your air, which is much easier to judge in a lesson.
Do I need my own clarinet?
For practice between lessons, yes. Renting is a good way to start; ask before buying, because a poorly adjusted clarinet makes everything harder.
Can I take clarinet lessons on Zoom?
Yes. Headphones and Zoom's "original sound for musicians" setting help your tone come through accurately.
