Erhu Lessons in Athens, GA

Learn the two-string Chinese violin — the instrument whose voice sounds almost human. One-on-one erhu lessons at Rabbit Hole Studios, at your home, or live on Zoom.

Taught by Nick Bradfield

From $45 · 30-minute lesson

The erhu has two strings, no fingerboard, and no frets, and its bow is threaded between the strings rather than resting on top of them. That makes it unlike anything else you may have played: pitch comes entirely from how you press the string, and tone comes from the bow. It's also why the erhu can slide, cry, and sing the way few instruments can.

Lessons build the fundamentals properly — holding the instrument, bow control, finding pitch by ear, and the vibrato and slides that give the erhu its character — and then the music: traditional Chinese pieces, folk melodies, and the film and pop music the erhu turns up in today.

Built from the ground up

Posture, bowing, and intonation set up properly from the first lesson, so the erhu's famous tone comes naturally.

Traditional and modern

Classic Chinese repertoire and folk songs, plus the film, pop, and crossover music the erhu is heard in now.

Face to face in Athens

In-person erhu teaching is hard to find in this part of Georgia. Here you can learn it at the studio or at home.

Or on Zoom

Not near Athens? Erhu lessons work well over live video, with the same one-on-one attention.

Frequently asked questions

How much are erhu lessons?
On a monthly plan, lessons are $45 for 30 minutes, $60 for 45, or $75 for 60; a single lesson is $10 more. Online lessons cost the same as studio lessons. In-home lessons add travel at $100 an hour of round-trip drive time from Athens — roughly up to $65 within 15 miles, and up to about $220 at 50 miles. Full details are on the pricing page.
Where do I get an erhu?
Student erhus are sold by specialist Chinese instrument sellers. Ask before you buy — quality varies a lot, and a poorly made erhu is hard to play in tune. Traditional erhus use python skin, which can be subject to wildlife import rules; many modern instruments use a synthetic skin instead.
Do I need to read music or speak Chinese?
Neither. Lessons are in English and start by ear. Jianpu — the number notation much erhu music is written in — is simple to learn when you're ready.
I play violin. Will that help?
Partly. Your ear and bowing instincts help, but the erhu's bow runs between the strings and there's no fingerboard, so some violin habits need unlearning. Violinists usually adjust quickly.
Can I learn erhu on Zoom?
Yes. A camera angle that shows both hands and the bow, plus Zoom's "original sound for musicians" setting, make online erhu lessons work well.
